A697 update

Following some concerns about the forthcoming road closures on the A697, Northumberland County Council has issued an update on these planned highways improvements.

The Council is carefully taking into consideration the impact that these works will have on both local businesses and residents.

The planned works will be in three stages:

Stage 1 – Heighley Gate

Work on a 1,350 metre stretch of road in the Heighley Gate area will commence on 5 July and will be completed by 15 July 2011. The work will be carried out under traffic signal and as such the road will not be closed.

Stage 2 – Ilderton

Work on a 460 metre stretch of road at Ilderton will commence on 14 July and will be completed by 19 July 2011. Works will be carried out at night to keep disruption to a minimum. Residents have been consulted on this scheme and have been assured that noise disturbance will cease by 2am at the latest.

Stage 3 – Wellhope

Work on a 4,000 metre stretch of road will commence on 18 July and will be completed by 22 July 2011. Originally it was planned to carry out these works during the daytime but the council has agreed that this work should now be carried out at night.

Diversions will be in place to redirect traffic through Rothbury. The Council is mindful of the potential impact on local businesses if works were to be carried out during daytime hours. The Council will of course be consulting with local residents in the Wellhope area who may have concerns over noise disturbance on this stretch of road whilst work is ongoing overnight.

The Council will ensure that careful consideration is given to the road signage that will be used to advise motorists of road closures and diversions during these schemes and will also ensure that clear advice and communications are delivered via the Council's website and that this information regularly updated.
